§ History:
Hazel Cecily Lyttle was born in 1675 to Mary and John Lyttle in Ipswitch, Massachusetts. The couple was a good Puritan duo and Hazel was the youngest of their four children. The Lyttles had two boys, followed by two girls. They were seen as community leaders in the area and were well respected.
Mary Lyttle had a secret that she hid from most of her family. Mary Lyttle was one of a very long line of witches. Passed down from mother to daughter throughout her family she was hopeful for a daughter of her own who would have the gift. When her eldest daughter, Philippa, was six she began to show signs of having the gift. Her younger daughter, Hazel, never did.
Hazel had grown up extremely close with her older sister. She preferred to learn from Philippa when it came to sewing and cooking and other skills a girl in her time period should know. She idolized the older girl and felt as if she always fell short in comparison. One area where Hazel shined over her sister, however, was when it came to looks. Though she was a chaste and humble Puritan girl, Hazel couldn't hide her beautiful face. As she got older even the shapeless clothing she wore, that looked like that of all the other girls, could not hide her exceptional curves and beauty.
Despite the closeness Hazel and Philippa possessed, Hazel was not aware of her sisters growing skills as a witch. It was something that Philippa and Mary kept very quiet and personal between the two of them. Salem County, Massachusetts in the latter part of the 1600s was not a good time to be a witch, however. In February of 1692 the Salem Witch trials, one of the largest examples of mass hysteria, began.
Though all of the people accused during the Salem Witch Trials were believed to be magic, it was not determined how many actually were witches. Many of the accusations were made as a result of jealousy, anger, or other such selfish reasoning. It was believed that it was jealousy that led to the accusation of 17 year old Hazel Lyttle. It was stated that her beauty was magically enhanced and that she was using her magic to bewitch the men of the town to turn away from their wives and have eyes only for her. A search of the Lyttle household revealed far too many things that would incriminate her. Mary and Philippa claimed that she had been framed but knew that the items found were theirs.
Hazel was taken away to be held and on the day of her trial was clearly found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging. She was placed in prison where she awaited her trial. As she stayed there, waiting, she'd sing to herself. One night, outside of the small window that led to the outside, she received a visitor. He spoke to her, though she never saw his face. He only came at night and she found herself growing close to the mysterious stranger. The evening before she was set to hang she found herself crying hysterically to him, confessing that she had been faking her strength during their previous talks. She told him she didn't want to die, that she truly hadn't done anything wrong and that she'd give anything to avoid the hanging that was coming to pass.
The mystery man asked her if she truly meant it. If she really would give anything to avoid death the next evening. Once she reaffirmed this statement he promised her that she would not die the next day. He gave her a small container of deep red fluid, instructing her to drink it right before she was taken to hang. Though it worried her, Hazel felt as if she had nothing to lose and when she heard them coming she drank the thick red liquid. She knew, almost immediately, that she'd just imbibed blood and worried that there was actual witchcraft coming into play. She was taken to the gallows and a hood was placed over her head. The rope was put around her neck and, along with three others, the floor was dropped out from under her. She fell and felt herself black out from lack of oxygen.
Hazel had thought, as she lost consciousness, that surely she was dead. But then she felt herself tasting the same thick red liquid from earlier, only this time it was warm. She had not died, she'd just almost died. She didn't keep consciousness very long but the next time she awoke she would find things very different for herself. She was unaware that the stranger was a vampire and that he'd fed from her prior to having her feed from him. He'd fallen for her beauty and innocence and wanted her for his own. At the age of seventeen, Hazel Lyttle was killed for the crime of witchcraft but was reborn as one of the undead.
Life, for the girl, was hard after her turning. Her sire kept her close, teaching her his ways. Though grateful for her life, Hazel found that she resented what she had become. She'd been a kind and pious girl in her life, shy, quiet, and unassuming. In death she was forced into being a killer to survive. With her innocence and piety in life, Hazel had the misfortune of keeping some of her soul in afterlife. Her sire realized this and had to make the hard decision of forcing her to kill, thereby diluting her soul, or not allowing her to do so, giving her the last vestige of humanity to keep.
Hazel retained her soul. While she was still young enough to be out of control he forced it upon her, having her eat but with him always being the one to bring the person to the verge of death and beyond. Once she was old enough to curb her instinct to kill she was able to find that point herself between where death would come versus where her victim could stay alive and heal from the injury. Though she didn't cross the line and take someone's life, some of her innocence did disappear. Hazel's sire did not have pure intentions in turning the girl. Nor were they pure when it came to keeping her with him and teaching her. She failed to realize this at first but eventually his intentions were quite clear. He lusted for her. After nearly a year together she allowed him to have her virginity.
Their relationship changed after that into the first adult relationship Hazel had ever had. They stayed together for awhile but eventually parted ways as her soul did get in the way. He taught her a lot, however, including how to control the mind of her victimes, the thing he'd passed down to her as her Gift. When they did separate after a few years she was prepared and accepted it. He gave her money and she moved along.
The girl has traveled for most of her afterlife and last year settled in the Blue Ridge mountains, setting up shop in Asheville.
